Dissent in Wichita: The Civil Rights Movement in the Midwest, 1954-72
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Illinois Pr (Pro Ref) (December, 2001)
Average review score:

An essential work on the Midwest roots of the movementThe critical events and personalities of the civil rights movement weren't confined to the southern United States. As Gretchen Cassel Eick so ably demonstrates, Wichita, KS was itself a center of the struggle in the critical period from 1954 through 1972.
From a 1958 drugstore lunch counter sit-in that predated the more famous one in Greensboro, NC by two years, to agonizing struggles for school and housing desegregation, this mid-sized city far from the national headlines had all of the elements.
As reviewer Randy Bradbury said in the Wichita Eagle, "Gretchen Cassel Eick's book is a well-documented reminder that Kansas has been and is a place divided along racial lines, where opportunities differ depending on skin color."
Professor Eick creates a compelling narrative by weaving Wichita happenings in with those on the national level. So we see Wichita events in a context of changes in social beliefs, political leadership and even how they shaped and were shaped by infighting in the national leadership of the NAACP.
She also introduces us to a fascinating cast of activists at the center of the local struggle, a few of whom also played national roles.
The book works on two levels -- both as a narrative for the lay reader and as a well-documented study for academics.
As Bradbury wrote in his Wichita Eagle review, the book "must be considered an essential read for anyone interested in the history of race relations in Wichita or hoping for a foundation to begin understanding where those relations stand today. Additionally, however, the book is an exceelent primer on the national civil rights movement..."

Encore Wisconsin

INSPIRED TO COOK AND TRAVELThis book is packed full of great recipes from the best Inns in Wisconsin. Grace Howaniec does a very fine job of reviewing each of the wonderful places she has visted. I had read one of her columns in the Milwaukee Journal for Apple Pancake, which my husband and I had the opportunity to try at a B & B out in Spring Green, and it was out of this world. Grace makes these recipes very clear to follow and portions are all sized down to the family table, plus tips for leftovers.....BUT....will there be any? You will find lots of recipes to love in Encore Wisconsin.

Exploring Kansas: New Look at the Sunflower State
Published in Paperback by Sounds of Kansas (May, 1996)
Average review score:

Finding Hidden Travel TreasuresMil Penner takes us to small towns and hamlets off the beaten track in a state that many people pass over. The book reads like a series of articles about the counties he highlights. There are not many habitated towns in most of the counties he explores.
He highlights local history and culture, both in artifacts and personalities. He looks at the Santa Fe Trail, ethnic settlements, wildlife, festivals, museums (both public and private), historic structures and small industries.
If you are planning on travelling to or through Kansas, this book will open your eyes to some opportunities that aren't found in more popular travel guides. If you are looking for a quiet and unrushed place to tour, you will find it in Kansas. This is a ground-level view of a well-grounded state.

Field Guide to Illinois Hauntings (Haunted Field Guide Series, Book 3)
Published in Paperback by Whitechapel Productions (September, 2002)
Average review score:

Just in time for HalloweenAnother great book by a real paranormal researcher. This book is easy to read, has maps, lots of useful information and the short stories in the back are very informative. I like how the book is broke up into sections, how you know where your looking and what your looking for. Jim Graczyk does what others have not in the past, and that is getting specific enough to tell you where the alleged haunting is taking place or where to actually look. Too many books tell you to just go to this area or cemetery, the author narrows the information down so that here is no guess work. The author covered a vast area of the state so he took upon a co-author that is actually a researcher herself. Two real life researchers could only make the book even better. These "Field Guides" are a series of books by the publisher, only makes us wonder what books are coming out in the future.
